This compassionate session explores the unique emotional and physical needs of patients and their loved ones during times of loss. Participants will learn supportive communication techniques, cultural considerations, and self-care strategies to provide comfort while respecting individual grieving processes.
Faculty Bio:
Thomas A. Welk, D.Min
Tom Welk is a native of North Dakota. He came to Wichita in the fall of 1970, and joined the staff at Newman University.
In the summer of 1981 he began working with a committee of interested community members to help start a hospice program in Wichita. When Hospice was legally incorporated in the summer of 1982, he served as a member of the first Board of Directors, and was actively involved in putting together a hospice service plan. He became a staff member of Hospice of Wichita (now known as Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice) in August 1983.
At present he is the Director of Professional Education and Pastoral Care. His responsibilities include education regarding dying/death issues, information on hospice care, and coordination of the ethical decision making process regarding treatment questions.
He has a doctoral degree in pastoral counseling, with emphasis on end of life issues. His doctoral dissertation concentrated on medical ethics. Tom is a founding member and past president of the board of directors for Kansas Health Ethics, Inc., and serves on several ethics committees in south central Kansas.
Educational background: B.A. in philosophy from the University of Dayton
M.A. in theology from the University of Dayton
D.Min. in Pastoral Counseling from the Graduate Theological Foundation
C.P.E. (Clinical Pastoral Education) from Prairie View Mental Health Center, Newton, Kansas
A.A.P.C. (American Association of Pastoral Counselors) Certified Member

Requirements:
- Define and distinguish between LDL (low-density lipoprotein), HDL (high-density lipoprotein), and triglycerides.
- Understand the health risks associated with high cholesterol and why cholesterol management is vital.
- Identify common dietary and lifestyle factors that influence cholesterol levels.
- Recognize misleading “fad” diets or cholesterol myths and understand evidence-based approaches to nutrition.
- Apply simple, personalized nutrition hacks to support heart health and cholesterol balance.
